A barrier (10) for providing a barrier between a body of water or a mass of a particulate solid material and a protected area is disclosed. The barrier comprises a protected area facing side, an opposite barrier side, an above ground barrier part and a below ground barrier part. 5 The barrier (10) comprises a plurality of spaced apart elongate support members (22) extending substantially vertically into the ground to a depth below ground level and above the ground to a height above ground level and at least one barrier arrangement mounted to at least one of the support members; such that the barrier arrangement has a below ground barrier part and an above ground barrier part. 10 Figure 1
