The invention relates to a similar material for simulating an expansible tunnel surrounding rock and a preparation method of the similar material. The similar material comprises the following components with different permeation grades: high-permeability expansive soil, medium-permeability expansive soil and low-permeability expansive soil, wherein the high-permeability expansive soil comprises 96-105 parts of coal ash, 11-17 parts of bentonite and 8-10 parts of silicon oil; the medium-permeability expansive soil comprises 95-104 parts of coal ash, 17-25 parts of bentonite and 8-11 parts of silicon oil; and the low-permeability expansive soil comprises 96-105 parts of coal ash, 25-30 parts of bentonite and 9-12 parts of silicon oil. According to the preparation method, bentonite with different permeation rates can be proportioned to carry out a model experiment, not only can the drying and wetting cycle field condition be simulated, but also the mechanical and deformation characteristics of the expansible surrounding rock can be met; and the local materials are used, so that the materials are conveniently obtained and are saved. The bentonite is a rock mainly composed of montmorillonite so as to have extremely high expansibility. Non-combusted carbon granules in the coal ash are of loosen porous structures so as to have high permeability and an expansion inhibiting effect, and furthermore, the permeability and expansion grade of the similar material can be regulated by changing the ratio.
