The invention discloses coal gangue ceramsite and a preparation method thereof, and relates to a building material and a preparation method thereof, wherein the coal gangue ceramsite comprises the following raw materials by weight: 62%-92% of coal gangue, 8%-12% of carbide slag, and 10%-30% of quartz tailings, the coal gangue is uncalcined coal gangue or calcined coal gangue or a mixture of the uncalcined coal gangue and the calcined coal gangue, the carbide slag is solid waste discarded after chemical industry products are prepared from acetylene, and the quartz tailings are solid waste abandoned in a quartz production process. According to the invention, coal gangue, carbide slag and quartz tailings in ceramsite manufacturing raw materials are all solid waste, and the maximum mixing amount of the coal gangue in the raw materials is 92%, so that the problems that the coal gangue pollutes the earth surface and the atmosphere and wastes land are effectively solved, and resource utilization of the waste is effectively achieved; and shale and clay resources are not used as ceramsite raw materials, so that the ecological environment is effectively protected; and the ceramsite preparedby the method is simple in formula, low in stacking density and low in raw material cost.
