The invention discloses a thermal insulation material for a building external wall. The thermal insulation material is prepared from the following raw materials in parts by weight: 25-40 parts of modified expanded polystyrene, 30-40 parts of fly ash, 100-110 parts of Portland cement, 10-20 parts of a flame retardant, 10-15 parts of glass fibers, 75-100 parts of an elastic emulsion and 1-5 parts ofa binder. The invention further discloses a preparation method of the thermal insulation material for the building external wall. The expanded polystyrene granule molecules are spherical molecules and are stable in structure and compact molecules, so that the methoxypolyethylene glycol can be grafted to the surfaces of the expanded polystyrene granules, hydrophilic groups can be given to the expanded polystyrene granules, the hydrophilic performance of the expanded polystyrene granules is enhanced, and the methoxypolyethylene glycol is usually used as a raw material of a cement superplasticizer and can provide relatively strong dispersing performance for cement granules, and therefore, the stability of slurry can be improved after the prepared modified expanded polystyrene granules are mixed with cement.
