The invention discloses [alpha] alumina with low sodium oxide content and a preparation method thereof, and the preparation method comprises the following steps: uniformly mixing 100 parts by weight of high-sodium aluminum hydroxide, 1-3 parts by weight of silica-containing quartz sand and 0.62-0.775 part by weight of a mineralizer, and calcining to obtain a reaction material, wherein the mass fraction of silicon dioxide in the silicon-containing quartz sand is greater than or equal to 96%; and screening the reaction material to obtain the alpha alumina with low sodium oxide content. According to the method, after the silicon-containing quartz sand is added and calcined, SiO2 and NaO in the silicon-containing quartz sand react to generate Na2SiO3, sodium is adsorbed on the surface of the silicon-containing quartz sand in a solid form, impurities are screened out by using a screening method, the purpose of reducing sodium in the calcined alpha-alumina is achieved, and the mass fraction of sodium oxide in the finally prepared alpha-alumina with the low sodium oxide content is smaller than or equal to 0.3%.
