The invention discloses a green roof and a construction method thereof. The green roof comprises pervious concrete and vegetation, wherein a plurality of pores are formed in the pervious concrete, the porosity of the pervious concrete is 15%-25%, and the pores are filled with gelatinous plant nutrition matrixes; the plant nutrition matrixes is prepared from the following components of, in parts by weight, 5 to 6 parts of sodium alginate, 14 to 16 parts of plant nutrient solution and 100 to 120 parts of water; and the root system of the vegetation is rooted in the plant nutrition matrixes. The green roof has the advantages of being simple in structure, convenient to manufacture, small in size and light in weight, the problem of environmental pollution is effectively avoided, the green roof is more environmentally friendly, potential safety hazards are eradicated, the ground holding performance of vegetation is effectively improved, and the possibility that the vegetation is pulled up by strong wind or typhoon is avoided.
