The invention discloses a macroporous alumina carrier and a preparation method thereof, and the catalyst carrier is prepared by the following steps: adding alumina as a matrix into an oil-in-water type oil-water emulsion prepared from deionized water, a pore-forming agent and a pore-forming auxiliary agent for pulping; the micro-emulsion drops in the oil-water emulsion are uniformly dispersed in the aluminum oxide slurry by stirring, and then macropores are formed in the aluminum oxide by quick drying and roasting. The use amount of the pore-forming agent is 1wt%-2wt% of the weight of aluminum oxide, the use amount of the pore-forming auxiliary agent is 0.15 wt%-0.25 wt% of the weight of aluminum oxide, and the macroporous aluminum oxide carrier is suitable for preparing a diesel distillate oil hydrogenation catalyst.
