The invention belongs to the technical field of aerogel preparation, and discloses silicon dioxide fiber aerogel and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method comprises the following steps: evaporating, spinning and dispersing a mixed solvent of ethanol and hydrochloric acid and tetraethyl silicate to obtain silicon dioxide fiber dispersion liquid; mixing the silicon dioxide fiber dispersion liquid with tetraethyl silicate and oxalic acid, freezing and freeze-drying to obtain hydrophilic silicon dioxide fiber aerogel; and mixing the silicon dioxide fiber dispersion liquid with a silane compound and oxalic acid, freezing and freeze-drying to obtain the hydrophobic silicon dioxide fiber aerogel. The separation efficiency of the obtained hydrophilic silicon dioxide fiber aerogel or hydrophobic silicon dioxide fiber aerogel on oily sewage reaches 98% or above, the separation effect on the oily sewage is good, the preparation process is simple, the used raw materials are simple and easy to obtain, and a foundation is laid for developing the aerogel for the oily sewage with high separation efficiency.
