The invention discloses a magnesium fluoride-based composite neutron moderation material and a preparation method thereof. The magnesium fluoride-based composite neutron moderation material is prepared from the following components in parts by weight through hot pressed sintering: 97.5-99.5 parts of magnesium fluoride and 0.5-2 parts of lithium fluoride, or magnesium fluoride, calcium fluoride, aluminum powder and lithium fluoride, and the mass ratio of the magnesium fluoride to the sum of the calcium fluoride, the aluminum powder and the lithium fluoride is (50-80): (20-50); the mass ratio of the calcium fluoride to the aluminum powder to the lithium fluoride is (30-35): (64-69): 1; or magnesium fluoride, aluminum fluoride, aluminum powder and lithium fluoride, and the mass ratio of the magnesium fluoride to the sum of the aluminum fluoride, the aluminum powder and the lithium fluoride is (50-80): (20-50); the mass ratio of the aluminum fluoride to the aluminum powder to the lithium fluoride is (30-35): (64-69): 1; or 60-90 parts of magnesium fluoride and 5-40 parts of calcium fluoride; or 60-90 parts of magnesium fluoride and 5-40 parts of aluminum fluoride.
