The invention provides a method for melting red mud in an electric furnace, and belongs to the field of solid waste resourceful treatment. The method comprises the following steps: adding a reducing agent, a binder, a flux and fly ash into red mud, mixing and granulating, preheating and drying by a chain grate after granulating, roasting in a rotary kiln after drying, and directly feeding roasted sand into an electric furnace; molten iron produced through reduction enters a pig casting machine through a discharging opening and is cooled and formed into iron ingots to be put in storage, and slag is subjected to water quenching to become an available building material. In the process, high-temperature flue gas generated by the electric furnace is sequentially conveyed to the rotary kiln and the chain grate by the electric furnace, the high-temperature flue gas exchanges heat with the materials to be roasted and dried respectively, and the flue gas subjected to heat exchange is exhausted into the atmosphere after being treated by a desulfurization and denitrification system and a bag-type dust removal flue gas treatment system. According to the method, iron metal in the red mud can be recycled, solid waste is fully utilized, meanwhile, the water-quenched slag can be used as a building material, and the stacking problem of the red mud is solved.
