The invention relates to a slump retaining agent and a preparation method thereof, and the slump retaining agent is prepared from the following raw materials in parts by weight: 28-36 parts of functional polyester macromonomer; 4-8 parts of a functional small monomer; 6 to 12 parts of unsaturated acid; 0.07 to 0.28 part of an initiator; 0.05 to 0.23 part of a chain transfer agent; 3-5 parts of a pH regulator; and 40 to 55 parts of water. The functional polyester macromonomer is directly introduced, the molecular structure of the slump retaining agent is changed, and the prepared slump retaining agent has the characteristics of good adaptability, good dispersity and long slump retaining time, can be compounded with a water reducing agent for use when being applied to the concrete preparation process, prolongs the construction time of concrete and saves the cost of engineering materials.
