The invention discloses an energy recovery system of an excavator in the technical field of additional modification of excavators, and aims to solve the problems of complicated assembly and poor energy-saving efficiency and safety of the energy recovery system of the excavator in the prior art. The method comprises the steps that when an excavator working arm descends, an energy storage device is charged through a traction machine, the excavator working arm ascends, the energy storage device releases energy, the traction machine assists the excavator working arm in ascending, and a mounting support and a traction rope are directly connected with an external machine body and the working arm of the excavator, so that the energy recovery system is easy to assemble and low in cost. The modification or design of a broad axe for the excavator is not needed, and the existing excavator can be additionally mounted; the energy recovery system of the excavator circularly utilizes gravitational potential energy of the working arm, the energy-saving effect is high, descending of the working arm can be buffered through the traction rope when the movable arm oil cylinder fails or is broken, the energy recovery system of the excavator is basically arranged externally, direct influence on a hydraulic system of the excavator is avoided, and the overall stability of the excavator is guaranteed.
