CLOSURE LATCH ASSEMBLY FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE
The present invention relates to a closure latch assembly for a motor vehicle, and in particular to a latch assembly and method for preventing unintentional movement of a latch mechanism from a latched state to an unlatched state in a crash state. The latch assembly includes a strength plate unit and a ratchet supported by the strength plate unit for pivotal movement between a striker release position and a striker capture position within a ratchet pivot plane. The pawl is supported by the strength plate unit for pivotal movement within a pawl pivot plane between a ratchet retaining position, in which the pawl retains the ratchet in the striker capture position, and a ratchet release position, in which the pawl allows pivotal movement of the ratchet within the ratchet pivot plane to the striker release position. The strength plate unit prevents at least one of movement of the ratchet wheel away from the ratchet wheel pivot plane and movement of the pawl away from the pawl pivot plane when the pawl is in the ratchet wheel holding position.
