In an example, a method includes receiving a digital representation of a plan view to be printed by a surface marking robot guided using a remote guidance system, receiving guidance system position information, and receiving obstacle information identifying an obstacle. The method further includes identifying a particular plan feature of the digital representation intersecting the shadow area of the obstacle from a perspective of the guidance system, and modifying the digital representation in response thereto to produce a second digital representation, whereby the particular plan feature is deleted or modified in the second digital representation, the modified plan feature excludes at least a portion of a particular plan feature in the shadow region. The method further includes operating the surface marking robot to print a second digital representation using the guidance system.
