The tamping unit (1) has a height adjustable guided carrier (2) that is arranged in tamping unit main portion and is designed as a rocker arm. The lower ends (5) of tamping unit are plunged into a gravel bed (4), are driven in opposite directions by a vibration drive (6) and are brought next to each other hydraulically. A tamping tool (3) is associated with a hydraulic cylinder (11) and a displacement sensor (12). The vibration drive of the tamping tool and the hydraulic cylinder are controlled based on the displacement sensor signal.
