The invention relates to a modular drive device for adjusting the metal fitting system of a window, a door or similar via electric motor, comprising: a transmission unit having a motor, a transmission and a transmission housing in which the motor and the transmission are accommodated, wherein the transmission has an output element which is designed for coupling to a force-transmission element via which the motor can be drivingly connected to the metal fitting system; an electronics unit which is designed for actuating the motor of the transmission unit; and a cover unit having a drive housing for externally covering the transmission unit and the electronics unit. The transmission unit is designed to be secured, independently from the electronics unit and the cover unit and in a partially covered manner, in a recess, in particular a machined groove on a front side of a frame of the window or the door. In addition, the electronics unit is designed to be detachably secured to the transmission unit in such a way that it can be exchanged independently from the transmission unit. Furthermore, the cover unit is designed to be detachably secured to the electronics unit, to the transmission unit and/or to the frame, preferably with the drive housing at least substantially completely outside the frame.
