The invention relates to a method for operating a track-laying machine (1) on a track section with an overhead line network (6), wherein the supply of power to the track-laying machine (1) by means of a current collector (5) from an overhead line (10) is selectively interrupted when crossing a neutral section (14) of the overhead line network (6). The number of existing contact points (20) between the current collector (5) and the overhead line (10), and in particular the position of each of said contact points, is continuously detected by means of a measuring arrangement (18). Owing to the continuous detection of the contact points, each crossover point is automatically detected.
