The invention relates to a compensating element (100) for extending a modular stairway (10), in particular a scaffold stairway, in the region of its entrance and/or exit, comprising - a tube (110), in particular a rectangular tube, having a longitudinal axis (A2) and having a first end portion (111) and a second end portion (112), - a bracket (130) for receiving a step element (140), the bracket (130) being connected, preferably welded, to the tube (110) in the region of the second end portion (112) and being arranged at an angle, in particular perpendicular, to the longitudinal axis (A2) of the tube (110), - connection means (150) for connecting the tube (110) to a stanchion (200) and/or to a stanchion element (210), the connection means (150) being connected, preferably welded, to the tube (110) in the region of the first end portion (111) and in the region of the second end portion (112) in each case via bracket-type holders (151), and the bracket-type holders (151) being arranged at an angle, in particular perpendicular, to the longitudinal axis (A2) of the tube (110). The invention further relates to a modular stairway (10), in particular a scaffold stairway, and to a method for extending a modular stairway (10).
