A ground surface access assembly 10 comprising a support frame 12, having at least three frame sidewall portions 14, a base flange 16 and further comprising a plurality of shelf members 18 that extend sideways and inwardly from at least two of said frame sidewalls configured in use to support a manhole cover tray within said support frame. The manhole cover tray comprises at least three cover sidewall portions connected to and located upon a floor portion, at least one of said cover sidewalls having a sideways and outwardly extending projection 26a with an aperture/keyhole 28 provided, in use, to allow engagement with a cover lifting tool T inserted through said aperture/keyhole, so as to enter a void (V) located between an adjacent/associated frame sidewall and cover sidewall.
