PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vibration damping structure capable of adapting to a large deformation and restricting occurrence of an excessive deformation.SOLUTION: A vibration damping structure comprises: a target structure for vibration damping; multiple first seismic isolation units, which are disposed in horizontal direction at intervals from each other on an apex of the target structure for vibration damping; spanning members, which are bridged between the first seismic isolation units; second seismic isolation units, which are stacked on the first seismic isolation units through spanning members; a mass body, which is supported by the first seismic isolation unit and the second seismic isolation unit; and either one of a first energy absorption mechanism, which restricts larger horizontal displacement than acceptable horizontal displacement of the first seismic isolation unit between the spanning member and the target structure for vibration damping, or a second energy absorption mechanism, which restricts larger horizontal displacement than acceptable horizontal displacement of the second seismic isolation unit between the spanning member and the mass body.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
