PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal device authentication system and an on-vehicle device that improve security of authentication by adjusting the strength of an authentication signal to be transmitted.SOLUTION: A portable terminal device authentication system includes an on-vehicle side control unit that generates a plurality of instruction signals having different duty ratios and supplies the instruction signals to an on-vehicle side transmission unit correspondingly to a request signal. The on-vehicle side transmission unit generates authentication signals having signal strength corresponding to the duty ratios of the supplied plurality of instruction signals and transmits the request signal including the authentication signals to a portable terminal device. The on-vehicle side control unit or a portable side control unit, on the basis of a processing result of the portable side control unit, determines the validity of an on-vehicle device or the portable terminal device.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
