The in-vehicle side control unit of a portable terminal device authentication system generates a plurality of instruction signals having different duty ratios, and supplies the generated instruction signals that are associated with the request signal to the in-vehicle side transmission unit, the in-vehicle side transmission unit generates authentication signals with signal intensities corresponding to the duty ratios of the supplied plurality of instruction signals, and transmits the request signal including the authentication signals to a portable terminal device, and the in-vehicle side control unit or the portable side control unit determines the validity of the in-vehicle device or the portable terminal device on the basis of the processing result of the portable side control unit.
