To widen an embankment without requiring the construction of steps on an existing embankment.SOLUTION: An embankment widening method is a method for widening an embankment by constructing a widening embankment 3 on an existing embankment 1. This method includes a step of providing a connection layer 2 for the sloping surface of the existing embankment 1, and a step of constructing the widening embankment 3 by piling earth on the connection layer 2. The connection layer 2 has water permeability, and its internal friction angle is larger than that of the existing embankment 1. The N value of the connection layer 2 is larger than those of the existing embankment 1 and the widening embankment 3. The connection layer 2 has a plurality of steps 21 on a surface on the widening embankment 3 side.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
