To provide a portable device and an electronic key system for a vehicle capable of suppressing possibility of illegal use of the vehicle.SOLUTION: A system mounted on a vehicle is provided with a portable device and a charger mounted on the vehicle having a function of charging the portable device through wireless or wire other than a function of wireless communication, sending a vehicular charge notification signal to the portable device when the charger mounted on the vehicle begins to charge the portable device. The portable device activates an operation mode where a response signal can be returned when charging begins after receiving the vehicular charge notification signal, while activating an operation mode where the response signal is not returned when charging begins without receiving no vehicular charge notification signal. Thereby, no response signal will be returned when the portable device is charged at home and like other than in the vehicle.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
