To provide a hydraulic drive unit capable of supplying a suitable hydraulic fluid on the occurrence of slippage of a traveling body of a work machine.SOLUTION: A hydraulic drive unit includes: a specific work actuator 27 for making a work arm perform traveling assist movement in the slippage; first and second traveling motors 25R, 25L; first and second hydraulic pumps 31, 32; a travel switching valve 39 capable of switching between a neutral position PN and a straight traveling position PS; a communication throttle 39b provided at a communication path for bringing a work oil passage into communication with a traveling oil passage in the straight traveling position; and a switching control unit 50 for switching the travel switching valve 39 to the neutral position PN in the single operation, and switching the travel switching valve 39 to the straight traveling position PS in the specific compound operation when the advance traveling operation and the specific work operation are carried out simultaneously. The switching control unit 50 adjusts an opening of the communication throttle 39b so as to reduce a flow rate in the communication path 39c as a difference between the first pump pressure and the second pump pressure is large.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
