To provide an alumina carrier to be used for a catalyst for gas phase reaction, highly activating catalytic reaction, and reduced in a yield of by-products, and to provide a gas reaction catalyst carried with a metallic compound on the alumina carrier.SOLUTION: An alumina carrier to be used for a catalyst for gas phase reaction has a cylindrical shape having at least one penetrating hollow hole. The alumina carrier is such that: a BET specific surface area is 140-280 m2/g; a volume (total pore volume) of pores having a pore diameter of 15 nm or more and 20,000 nm or less, measured by a mercury press-in method is 0.04-0.15 cm3/g; a volume of pores having a pore diameter of 1,000 nm or more and 20,000 nm or less is 0.02 cm3/g or less; and a tapping bulk density is 620-780 g/L.SELECTED DRAWING: None
