A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Bicentennial Civic Center and Related Modifications to the Comprehensive Plan for the National Capital
The project proposes the development of a civic center in the downtown area of the District of Columbia. The civic center site is comprised of 10.31 acres bounded by Eighth Street, H Street, Tenth Street, New York Avenue, and K Street. It includes the right-of-way of I Street, NW., between Eighth and Tenth Street, and the use of the air-rights over Ninth Street for the structure. The facility will provide a meeting place for regional and national conventions, trade fairs, and public admission shows. It will contain approximately 640,000 gross square feet of enclosed floor area, and will be used by approximately 925,000 persons annually. The proposed modifications to the Comprehensive Plan include changing the designated use of the site to 'Other Major Institution,' and changing the designations of limited portions of New York Avenue, K Street, and Massachusetts Avenue to 'Major Arterial' while removing that designation on a segment of I Street. Environmental impacts and adverse environmental effects are discussed.
