Proposed Master Plan, White Sands National Monument, New Mexico
The statement concerns a revised conceptual master plan for White Sands National Monument, New Mexico setting up development patterns and goals, at least for approximately 5 years. The physical use and functional changes proposed will have an impact on the vegetative cover and dune areas. Increased visitation will cause expansion of overnight facilities in surrounding communities. The necessity of using mechanical equipment to retrieve fired missiles precludes wilderness designation for any part of the area. Construction of roads and visitor facilities will leave scars and have a visual impact. (Author)
