Diked Disposal Area Program, Ashland Harbor, Ashland, Wisconsin
The authorized project provides for contained disposal of polluted maintenance dredge spoil from Ashland Harbor, Ashland County, Ashland, Wisconsin. All dredge spoil has previously been dumped in the open waters of Lake Superior. Approximately 6 acres of land surface would be used for diked disposal. Any adverse effects of depositing polluted dredge spoil in the lake would cease. Temporary adverse effects are expected during the short term of active project life. Local turbidity of harbor water would be unavoidable during dike construction, cutting of an access channel, and spoil deposition. Because the disposal site would be elevated about 11 feet above the water surface, ecological succession following complete filling of the area would result in a biota somewhat different than the existing vegetation and fauna.
