A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Proposed Wilderness Area Colorado National Monument, Colorado
The National Park Service, Department of the Interior, proposes that 44 percent of Colorado National Monument, 7,700 acres, be designated as wilderness and be added to the National Wilderness Preservation System. Among the impacts resulting from wilderness designation would be prohibition of backcountry visitor facilities, curtailment of permanent research installations, restrictions on mechanized equipment, restrictions on road construction, and prohibition of recreational developments. Considering the present environment, the availability of similar ecosystems for research elsewhere, and regional recreational opportunities scattered throughout the Colorado plateau country, establishment of a wilderness area within the monument is expected to have minor adverse impact, either socially, economically, or ecologically.
