La Jara Dam is located on the Jucarilla Apache Indian reservation in north-central New Mexico about 20 miles south of the town of Dulce, New Mexico. The dam is operated by the Jicarilla Indian Tribe and is under the jurisdiction of the BIA. The dam was originally constructed in about the year 1900 (the exact date is unknown) by the BIA - Jicarilla Agency for irrigation purposes. The dam is reported to have been constructed near a previously existing natural lake. In 1963, the dam was raised approximately 7 feet and a 600-foot-long diversion dike was added in conjunction with work on New Mexico State Highway No. 537.
