Recreational park and open space areas serve man in many ways. They provide for the development and well-being of his mental and physical processes, conserve natural resources, and allow him to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature. Our metropolitan areas must plan so that parks and open space systems are able to keep pace with the continuing rise in demand for their use. At the present, the St. Louis Area has a total of 38,149 acres of regional parks and recreational open space. However, according to a provisional standard suggested by East-West Gateway Coordinating Council's parks and open space committee, there should be a total of 74,207 acres to properly meet the needs of a metropolitan area the size of St. Louis. Furthermore, by 1990, a total of 130,434 acres will be needed, or an additional 92,285 acres over what is now existing. (Author)
