Proposed Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming
The Department of the Interior, National Park Service proposes the establishment of Fossil Butte National Monument, 8180 acres, to preserve the greatest concentrations of fossilized fresh-water fish in the nation and one of the few such repositories in the world. National monument designation of the land is predominantly beneficial. The main adverse impacts will be the eventual restriction of grazing, increased visitor use, and curtailment of mining claims. The beneficial effects include: halting deterioration of the fossil deposits through vandalism and nonconforming land use, increased educational and interpretive use, perpetuation of the ecosystems, and economic benefits to the local community from increased visitation.
