Long Highway Structures Without Expansion Joints
Because of the initial cost and inherent problems with expansion joints, especially at abutments, it has been the general practice in California since about 1970 to construct highway structures without expansion joints. California has over 100 jointless structures with length exceeding 350 feet. California has continued to review the jointless structure as its length increased. This report confirms the approach fill settlement and erosion problems and identifies some minor overstress problems. It also provides measured movement data, which includes shrinkage and prestress deformation, and lists some parameters to be considered in determining the life cycle cost of jointed and jointless structures.
