Archeological Testing at Mingus Mill, Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Archeological testing was conducted of the proposed site of sanitary facility improvements at Mingus Mill in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These improvements will affect a prehistoric archeological site, 31 Sw 80, which is included within the Oconaluftee Archeological District, A National Register of Historic Places property. As the portion of 31 Sw 80, which will be impacted by the proposed development, is located immediately south of the Mingus Mill parking area and appears to have been badly disturbed when it was constructed and as the three aboriginal artifacts recovered from the eight archeological tests in that area came from contexts that suggested redeposition, no impact to significant archeological resources is foreseen. Therefore, archeological clearance to proceed with the proposed construction is given.
