Fatigue Evaluation of the Holston River Bridge, Knox County, Tennessee
In January 1992, the Holston River Bridge suffered a fatigue failure of the east bound fascia girder. The crack propagated through the bottom flange of the girder and tore through the web to within a few inches of the top flange. Construction began immediately to repair the bridge and retrofit the area where the failure initiated to assure that the problem would not reoccur. The retrofit repairs are described in detail in this report. Basically the retrofit stiffened the area where the outriggers, supporting the outside lane and shoulder, frame into a contract with the University of Tennessee to evaluate the repairs and the effectiveness of the retrofit.
