Salem Maritime National Historic Site, Massachusetts: Ingersoll/Forrester/Central Wharf, Together with Data on the Physical History of the Flanking Derby/Hatch/Very Wharf, the White/Sanborn/Whipple Wharf, and the Derby/Ward/Smith Wharf, Located on Lots D, E, F, and G of the Salem Waterfront
Central Wharf in Salem, Massachusetts, (Ingersoll/Forrester/Central) was the third of a series of wooden wharves constructed by Salem merchants in the late 18th and early 19th century for their shipping activities. It stands today at the edge of Salem Maritime National Historic Site and this report precedes possible restoration of parts of the wharf and/or its use for visitor facilities at the park. The report presents a narrative description of the wharf's ownership and construction from 1742 until 1936, of the buildings that were built on it, and of two men whose ownership was particularly significant in the wharf's history. The report also condenses this narrative history into quickly read charts. That same kind of information is also given for three adjacent wharves (Derby/Hatch/Very Wharf, White/Sanborn/Whipple Wharf, Derby/Ward/Smith Wharf) whose construction history complements information needed about Central Wharf. A bibliography, photographs, and drawings accompany the report.
