Proposed Wilderness Area, Joshua Tree National Monument, California
The National Park Service proposes that 372,700 acres within Joshua Tree National Monument be designated as wilderness, with a total of 66,800 acres proposed as potential wilderness additions. It is recommended that a special provision be included in the legislation to give the Secretary of the Interior the authority to designate these lands as wilderness at such time as they qualify. These lands are primarily in State and private ownership but are to be acquired. Beneficial effects of the wilderness designation include perpetuation of plant and wildlife communities, benefits to the regional human community, and maintenance of a consistent management policy. Adverse effects include diminished management flexibility and visitor use capacity through restriction of motorized access and development of intensive use facilities.
