This Federal Element of the Comprehensive Plan for the National Capital establishes federal planning policies and recommendations related to parks, open space, and natural features in the National Capital Region, and includes a summary of background data and a review of issues. The Parks, Open Space, and Natural Features Element of the Comprehensive Plan defines, identifies, and establishes planning policies and guidelines in accordance with legislative mandates for the proper use and protection of the National Capital Open Space System. This includes federal as well as non-federal parklands, open space, and natural features that are nationally significant. These areas are of federal interest because of their importance to the National Capital setting.
