Predicting the Bearing Capacity of a Pile from Dynamic Measurements
The study for Georgia was conducted as part of a national cooperative study in order to extend and verify developed dynamic testing techniques to predict the bearing capacity of a pile. A construction pile, after being statically tested, was instrumented with force and acceleration transducers and restruck several times. Dynamic measurements were recorded on electromagnetic tape and were later analyzed. Support data included soil conditions, pile details, driving conditions, and static load tests, i.e., constant rate of penetration. The developed analysis prediction method, Case Simplified Method, was used for prediction of capacities. Predictions compare favorably with load test capacities; and, a commercial system has been developed.
