Abstract With the advent of the computer in all aspects of human endeavor, it is no wonder that the computer is having a huge impact on our industry. At first, it was used to do mathematical calculations that were originally done by hand and also to assist engineers to perform their tasks by access into data based systems. But now research is leading into knowledge-based and intelligence-based systems, and this is going to have a big impact. Coming from this will be comprehensive three-dimensional design systems that will encompass the whole of the building from design, construction, maintenance, occupation, and change in occupation. We are in for a great future with computers in the building industry.
