Application of CFRP in Concrete Culvert Bridges
Road and Canal Infrastructural development is essential for the economic prosperity and food security of the nation. Culverts are used for continuity of road when the canal become an obstruction. Culvert connects two banks of the canals. Historically, culverts were made up of concrete. The development of reinforced concrete has reformed the design of the culverts. With the advent of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), the design of the culverts had become more rationalized. Increasing popularity of CFRP is due to the fact that it can be tailormade to suite the intended purpose. Steel corrosion leads to member degradation, endangers structural integrity and may even cause catastrophic failures. The use of CFRP prevents such catastrophic failures to a great extent. A case study has been taken for modelling of the culvert slab. The skew angle of the slab is varied so that it can be used for the cases where the road is inclined to the flow direction of the canal so that the alignment remains unaffected. The variation of various properties like the displacement and stresses are studied for various angle. IRC prescribed loading is used for the design of the culvert. ABAQUS software has been used for the development of the model of the culvert. Since reinforced concrete is itself a composite material, its properties are also studied with respect to plain concrete slab. The results show that the addition of reinforcement improves the performance of the reinforced concrete culvert slab. Similarly, the addition of Carbon reinforced polymer adds up to strength of the culvert. Variation of the strength and serviceability with respect to properties of the fibre reinforced polymer, skew angle and reinforcement will give us an idea for the judicious use of the resources and optimize the design of the culvert accordingly.
