Where are We in the Mixed Valence Story?
Abstract When I chose the title for this talk I had expected to say general things about the overall mixed valence problem and its rather fascinating history, and to leave the question of its present and future to the rest of you. In the course of discussions with quite a number of people, however, I came to the realization that a number of us were trying to describe the identical general physical picture in very different words, and that if in fact we could focus more on our points of agreement than on our differences, perhaps we would find ourselves much closer to the solution of the problem than we might realize. Therefore, rather than trying to put things in historical perspective, I will try to keynote this conference by plunging into the midst of the controversial present with a number of provocative, if basically conciliatory, propositions, aimed at bringing us into a realization of how much we know, not how much we need to find out.
