Interaction between urban form and mode choice for the work journey: Manchester/Sheffield 1971–1981
Dasgupta M., Frost M. and Spence N. (1985) Interaction between urban form and mode choice for the work journey: Manchester/Sheffield 1971–1981, Reg. Studies 19, 315–328. This paper analyses the intra-city, inter-city and temporal variations in the mode used for the work journey in Manchester and Sheffield. The research examines the interaction between mode choice and urban structure by establishing associations between mode choice and residential location (as measured by distance from the city centre), socio-economic factors, and land use attributes. Temporal changes are affected by factors operating nationally, such as the growth of car ownership. Intra-city variations may be explained by the spatial ordering of socio-economic and land use attributes. Inter-city differences could arise from differing urban structure, the relative distribution of homes and jobs, as well as contrasting transport policies.
