Movement of a roof expansion joint
For three years the movement of an expansion joint in the roof of a new reinforced concrete wing of the NBRI building in Pretoria was monitored; recordings were also made of the temperatures of the ambient air and of the concrete. The results indicate that expansion joint movement may be predicted from the expected air temperatures and the published coefficients for concrete shrinkage and thermal expansion. The authors are respectively the present Head and the former Chief Technical Officer (now retired) of the Environmental Engineering Division, National Building Research Institute, South Africa.
