A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The effects of exposing a railroad tank car which contains a hazardous material, such as a flammable liquid or a flammable (liquified) gas, to fire are discussed. Failure of the car from the effects of fire can have disastrous consequences. Tank cars can be protected against fire by equippping them with thermal insulation systems which remain effective at high temperature and safety relief valve with adequate flow capacity. The ability of the thermal insulation system and the safety relief valve to provide sufficient protection can be predicted by analysis. Results of such predictions are presented for tank cars containing propane. Both the upright car case, where the valve vents vapor, and the overturned car case, where the valve vents liquid, are considered.
