Improvement of the binder properties of petroleum derivatives by blending with coal-tar pitch
Coal-tar pitches are widely used in the aluminium industry as a binder for the preparation of carbon anodes. Petroleum derivatives could be an interesting alternative for replacing, at least partially, coal-tar pitches. This paper describes the preparation and characterisation of new binders by blending petroleum derivatives with a commercial binder coal-tar pitch in different proportions. Two petroleum pitches (PP-B and PP-C) were blended in various proportions with a commercial binder coal-tar pitch. All the blended pitches wet the coke grains. From the standpoint of the solubility parameters, wettability and HPLC analysis, the blended pitches which contain 30 and 45 wt% of PP-B and PP-C seem to be the most suitable for use as binders. The binder properties of petroleum pitches are improved when they are blended with coal-tar pitches. The pyrolysis behaviour of such blends reveals a significant interaction between the components of petroleum and coal-tar pitch.
