Practical description of the rheology of fresh concrete
This paper presents in a popular scientific way, the rheology of fresh concrete and how alteration of each constituent of concrete will influence the rheological (Bingham) parameters, yield value and plastic viscosity. It discusses appropriate, rheological values for different types of concrete such as under-water, high performance and self-compacting concrete. Flow in pipe during pumping is also discussed and why normal concrete will be transferred as a plug in the pipe, where as self-compacting concrete will flow (shear) in the pipe during pumping, without segregation. Selfcompacting concrete is an ideal fluid to be evaluated by rheology (viscosimeter). The flowability of self-compacting concrete should be evaluated by using rheology as no empirical test can (to this day) fully describe its flow properties.
