Elevators & stairs for comparisons and combinations
Evacuation facilities for buildings and for ships are compared. Following this, a review is given of a few decades of efforts at modeling evacuation using elevators and stairs singly or in combination. Background is provided on the human movement performance of stairs and evacuation by stairs alone becomes increasingly protracted with increasing occupancy of buildings. Reliance on stairs for egress will demand greater attention to the key variable of width, including the choice of minimum widths stipulated in standards and codes. It is about time that building safety regulators, designers and owners/operators become open to change in traditional ways of thinking, not only about relatively simple issues such as stair width but about the overall system relied upon for egress in case of a wide range of emergencies.
