Proper fire protection can safeguard a facility from turbine lube oil fires, which can be physically and financially devastating. To understand the best way to prevent such fires, FM Global constructed a dollar 80,000 power generation hall mock-up to use during the recreation of full-scale turbine lube oil fires. The results of the mock-up test showed that local sprinkler protection, like the custom-designed units that provide a water source much closer to the targeted area, can only control these fires. Oil flow must be cut off as quickly as possible. A multi-step approach is needed to put out these fires and minimize damage to the facilities.
